Salary Cap

SimHoops Pro Contract Section

Based on the legacy contract rules page. Last updated in the legacy site: June 11, 2025.

This page consolidates the active cap, guarantee, RFA, UFA, and waiver rules that govern team-building in the modern application.

Salary Cap Restrictions

  • Elite salary cap: 13,000.
  • Semi-Pro salary cap: 8,000.
  • Maximum Semi-Pro salary is 1000 unless the player is on a rookie contract.
  • No guaranteed contracts are allowed on Semi-Pro teams.
  • Each team may have up to eight guaranteed contracts on the Elite roster.
  • No player over age 29 may be on a Semi-Pro team.
  • Veteran minimum is 400 for players age 25 and older; non-veteran minimum is 300.

Guaranteed Contract Release Penalties

Releasing a guaranteed contract triggers cap penalties based on contract length and the season in which the player is released.

Contract Length Year 1 Year 2 Year 3 Year 4 Year 5
5-year contract100%80%60%40%20%
4-year contract100%75%50%25%-
3-year contract100%66%33%--
2-year contract100%50%---
1-year contract100%----

Example: A five-year contract worth 1000 per season, released in year 3, creates cap hits of 600 in year 3, 400 in year 4, and 200 in year 5.

Example: A four-year contract worth 1000 per season, released in year 2, creates cap hits of 750 in year 2, 500 in year 3, and 250 in year 4.

  • If a player retires while under a guaranteed contract, the team takes one season of penalty per the release schedule. Non-guaranteed retirements carry no penalty.
  • If a player is claimed off waivers, the new team absorbs the contract and the old team still eats a 20% penalty for that season only.
  • Teams may not sign or trade for players if doing so would exceed the cap.
  • Teams that exceed the cap or guarantee limits are frozen from normal roster actions until compliant.
  • While non-compliant, the highest-paid player on the team cannot play.
  • Owners are fined 25 credits per day while out of compliance.
  • After seven consecutive game days of violation, the commissioner may terminate the owner.

Restricted Free Agency

  • RFA is meant to prioritize your best pending free agents, not retain everyone.
  • Each player receives a tier from 1 through 6 within age groups 22-25, 26-30, and 31+.
  • Tiers are driven mostly by rating, then modified by potential plus season and career production.
  • Semi-Pro players can still land in any tier, including tier 1, to prevent stashing behavior.
  • Teams get two chances to sign each RFA player.
  • Any eligible player not signed in RFA becomes an unrestricted free agent.
  • Poor offers can insult tier-3-and-above players and reduce both RFA odds and home-team UFA odds.
  • Non-insulted players grant their original team a 25% UFA retention bonus if that team makes an offer.

Unrestricted Free Agency

  • Players from both Elite and Semi-Pro rosters are available.
  • There are three UFA rounds.
  • Only Elite teams may bid in UFA.
  • Teams may carry up to 26 total players across Elite and Semi-Pro during UFA, subject to compliance cleanup rules.
  • Contracts may be up to five years.
  • Non-guaranteed deals may be no longer than three seasons.
  • If a team reaches 25 or 26 rostered players in rounds 1 or 2, it has 48 hours to rescind up to two older contracts and get back to 24.

Rescinding Restrictions

  • Guaranteed contracts cannot be rescinded.
  • Players already in the final year of a contract cannot be rescinded.
  • Players signed in current-season RFA or UFA cannot be rescinded.

Round Thresholds

  • Round 1: at least one offer at or above the player’s current salary must exist.
  • Round 2: at least one offer at 80% or more of current salary must exist.
  • Round 3: any player with a valid bid can sign if the destination team can remain legal.
  • Offers below a 3% signing chance are invalid.
  • No more than six offers are considered for any player; if more arrive, only the top six remain active.

Waivers

  • Waiver period is four days for all players.
  • Claim order is based on the waiver priority list built from team performance.
  • After a successful claim, the claiming team moves to the back of the list.
  • Any player who clears waivers becomes a free agent.
